A Double Standard for Cell Phones in Cars

I have a double standard when it comes to talking on a cell phone in a car. Let me have my hands-free connection in the car for quick work-related communication, updates to family members and calls about medical or automotive-related problems, but please only allow my younger sons, who are 18 and 20, to use their cell phones for emergencies when they are behind the wheel. Electronic Stability Control (Part 2) Serious Safety and Still Fun

If you read Part 1 of the blog on Electronic Stability Control (ESC), you know that ESC is a vehicle safety system that protects drivers and passengers from potential rollovers or unstable vehicle conditions. It is standard or optional on 218 2007 models. While the system can be a lifesaver in inclement weather or during evasive driving maneuvers, there is another side to ESC that appeals to driving enthusiasts. Automakers such as Ferrari, BMW, and Chevrolet (Corvette), among others, tune electronic safety systems so they don't detract from the driving experience on the racetrack. In fact, in some cases, these systems can actually enhance the experience and improve lap times on the racetrack.

ESC is Better Than Nine Lives

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) can help motorists retain control of their vehicle and even avoid vehicle rollovers—especially trucks and sport utility vehicles. The software-based safety system interacts with a vehicle's engine and drivetrain components to recognize and correct dangerous situations without driver intervention. ESC compares the direction in which the vehicle is headed with the direction the driver intends to go—as indicated by the position of the steering wheel. With speedy calculations, ESC can determine if the vehicle is headed off course and then takes corrective action, often before the driver even realizes there is a potential problem.

Safety Items at the Top of Buyers' Lists for Desired Features on Their Next Vehicle

Side-impact air bags, run-flat tires, stability control, night vision systems, blind spot detection, and backup assist - all safety-related features - are the vehicle technologies most desired among vehicle buyers these days. The recently released J.D. Power and Associates 2006 U.S. Automotive Emerging Technologies Study,SM which measures buyer familiarity, interest and purchase intent for emerging automotive technologies both before and after an estimated market value is revealed, reports that side-impact air bags are the most desired feature before and after the average market price is revealed. In fact, at an average market price of $600, 72% of new-vehicle buyers who responded say they "probably" or "definitely" would like to have their next new vehicle equipped with side-impact air bags.
